Madeira is an island made for views.

With its rugged cliffs, deep valleys, and high mountain peaks, it feels like there’s a viewpoint around every corner. Some are famous and well-visited, others are tucked away and easy to miss. Here are five viewpoints that give you the full mix — the must-sees and the secret stops.

1. Pico do Areeiro

At 1,818 metres, Pico do Areeiro is one of Madeira’s most famous viewpoints, and for good reason. From here you look down on a sea of clouds, with jagged peaks rising dramatically in every direction. Sunrise is popular here, but in summer it can get overcrowded. It’s often quieter later in the day, and sunset can be just as spectacular.

2. Miradouro de São Cristóvão (Boaventura)

This is a private viewpoint owned by a family-run restaurant, and it’s one of the best places on the north coast to stop and take it slow. From the terrace, you get wide views over the ocean and the cliffs that stretch all the way down the coastline. It’s a perfect spot to relax with a coffee or enjoy a leisurely lunch while soaking up the scenery.

3. Bica da Cana

High in the central mountains, Bica da Cana is a quieter alternative to the famous peaks. It often sits above the clouds, so you may find yourself looking out across a soft white sea with mountain tops poking through. It’s also a great choice for sunrise or sunset if you want a dramatic landscape without the crowds of Areeiro.

4. Eira do Serrado

From Eira do Serrado, you look straight into Curral das Freiras — the Nun’s Valley. Surrounded by towering cliffs, this deep basin feels completely cut off from the outside world. Just nearby is Paredão viewpoint, which offers a similar perspective but without the people, making it a peaceful alternative. Together, they are the best places to understand why this valley is one of Madeira’s most unique landscapes.

5. Santo da Serra (Golf Course Viewpoint)

This one isn’t marked as a viewpoint at all, which makes it feel like a real secret. From the Santo da Serra golf course area, there are open views across the coastline and green hills, stretching all the way to Ponta de São Lourenço on a clear day. Many people come here for a round of golf or simply to enjoy a cup of coffee with the view. If you want a perspective of Madeira that feels hidden in plain sight, this is the spot.

Tips for Visiting Viewpoints in Madeira

  • Go early or late: Sunrises and sunsets often give the most magical light — and fewer people.
  • Pack layers: Weather changes fast in the mountains, so bring a jacket even if it’s sunny by the coast.
  • Check conditions: Cloud cover can block the view, especially at higher peaks. Sometimes waiting 15 minutes makes all the difference.
  • Take it slow: Some of the best memories are made just sitting and soaking in the view.

🌿 Madeira has countless viewpoints, but these five give you a perfect mix of iconic sights and hidden gems. Whether you’re above the clouds, overlooking the Nun’s Valley, or sipping coffee at a quiet terrace, the island always finds a way to surprise you.
